TURN AZ BLUE!

Our Mission
- We intend to bring together activists, bloggers, and voters to work toward progressive political change in Arizona.

- By sharing information and keeping each other informed, we can coordinate efforts to promote progressive causes and candidates.

- We hope to provide a forum for local Democratic candidates to present their positions on issues of concern to Arizonans.

- Anyone who shares our goals is welcome to join and contribute.

- The age of open source politics is here. Lobbyists and special interests have run Arizona for too long.

- Let's take back Arizona from the big money special interests and the right wing crazies!

Shutdown Will Be Blamed on Legislature

    by: Zelph

Tue Jun 23, 2009 at 22:00:49 PM MDT

As you probably know by now, the Arizona Supreme Court today refused to compel the Arizona Legislature to forward the budget that it passed along to the governor who would likely veto it.  Republican leaders apparently believe that by refusing to forward the budget to the Governor, they can strengthen their bargaining position by threatening to drop it on her at the last minute, forcing her to decide whether to sign a budget she doesn't like or to shut down state government.

It seems that this strategy will fail according to a recent telephone survey that concludes that most voters will blame the Legislature, not the Governor, if state government is shut down.  Based on a representative sample of 500 likely voters in Arizona:

54% of the state's voters would blame the legislature, while only 13% would blame the Governor, and 18% would blame both. The remaining 15% has no opinion. Analysis of subgroup data shows that Republicans, Democrats and Independents alike would blame the legislature rather than the Governor.

No indication if voters are aware that negotiations with the Governor involved only Republican leaders and that only Republicans in the Legislature are to blame if a shutdown occurs.   Democrats must make a special effort to be sure that voters understand that they had no role in the budget negotiations, if a shutdown happens.

maybe, if the cards are played right, we will see a massive turnover of incumbents at the state legislature.  this whole thing has been a farce since they refused to allow Dems to be present at the negotiating table.  I'm represented by Dems, therefore I am not represented in the talks.  That is not governance, it's power-mongering at its worse.
